Biography
Bristol-born, London-based DJ and producer whose genre-defying sound fuses elements of grime, UK bass, dubstep, and experimental club music. Raised in St. Paul’s, a vibrant, multicultural suburb of Bristol, he grew up immersed in the rhythms of reggae and dancehall, thanks to the annual St. Paul’s Carnival and the local free-party scene. From an early age, he would slip into raves “way too young,” claiming he was “the baby in the coat pile,” and soaking up the raw energy that would later fuel his productions. In secondary school, Yves spent his lunch breaks at Rooted Records with Tom Peverelist, hunting down “Punch Drunk”-era 140 bpm dubstep and leftfield techno—sounds that would become the building blocks of his own musical identity. At age 15, Yves relocated to London, where he quickly found his footing in the city’s underground. He secured a spot at Soho Radio and began engineering vocals for grime heavyweights such as Ruff Sqwad, Tinchy Stryder, Giggs, and Frisco. His tenure at Wendy House Studios later led to an engineering call-up for Rihanna—an experience that, even when the star didn’t turn up, underscored his rapid ascent in studio circles. Meanwhile, he continued to write and produce in private, honing a distinct style that bridged his love for 140 bpm bass music with the rawness of grime. In 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Yves released his debut Pilot EP on Radio Slave’s Rekids imprint. The record immediately made waves in underground circles by prioritizing technical prowess over streaming metrics—it sold out swiftly, cementing his reputation as “a producer’s producer.” Building on that momentum, he issued further releases on labels such as Pyramids of Mars, Interlink Records, and Rinse, but it was the past two years that marked his full artistic coming of age. In 2024, his Temper Ost EP—an eight-track suite born from a Nowness short film—showcased his gift for ethereal, cinematic soundscapes. Later that same year, the PHRIDGE EP revealed a contrasting palette of deconstructed grime, UK garage, and broken-beat textures. May 2025 saw the arrival of “The Original” on Hypercolor, a track that brings together Yves’s penchant for left-field dub, grime-inflected percussion, and bass-heavy club sensibilities. Beyond the studio, he hosts a monthly show on Rinse FM, where he champions forward-thinking club music, and a debut BBC mix is slated to drop later this year. His collaborative résumé extends from fashion—scoring three runway seasons for Holzweiler and producing for brands like Braindead, Sacai, Supreme, and Nike—to acclaimed film work, including the award-winning short Temper. Supported by key figures such as Todd Edwards, Skream, Dusky, and A-Trak, Yves has used his production earnings to build his own studio and launch an eponymous label, which has quickly become one to watch. Rooted in Bristol’s underground heritage yet propelled by London’s relentless forward drive, Yves Tomas continues to push the boundaries of UK club culture. Whether balancing low-tempo atmospherics with peak-time bangers or bridging the worlds of grime and experimental bass, he remains committed to carving out a sound that is unmistakably his own—and always moving at its own pace.
